Bulging Disc

What happens if a bulging disc goes untreated?

Suffering from a bulging disc can be a painful experience. Spinal discs are the padding that is between the bones (vertebrae) in your back, and when one moves out of place it can cause great discomfort. This is because of the pressure the disc will exert on the nerves that run up and down the spine – but what happens if it goes untreated?

Untreated Bulging Disc

When a nerve is compressed, it can result in the nerve misfiring. This will cause a sensation of pain anywhere along the length of the nerve and can lead to a sensation of tingling or numbness. You may notice pain in the feet or legs, the hands, arms, shoulders, and other areas. If a bulging disc is untreated, the symptoms will become worse as the constant pressure on the nerve intensifies the sensations.

This can also cause issues with walking, and even while holding objects, as the pressure impedes the ability of the nerves to transmit information properly.

The disc can distort and expand, thereby covering more of the nerve(s) and increasing the pain. Furthermore, when the disc is out of place, the bones of the spine can rub together, once again causing pain.

Other effects can even include loss of bladder control if the bulging disc affects the nerves that are connected to the bladder.

Eventually, a bulging disc can turn into a herniated disc. This is what happens when the disc splits and the contents of the disc begin to leak out. There are many other causes of herniated discs, but this is one possibility – it makes sense to have a bulging disc treated sooner rather than later.

Treating a Bulging Disc

There are many treatments and therapies that can be used for a bulging disc. The first choice is often to use drugs to suppress the pain, but this effectively leaves the bulging disc untreated as it is still out of place and pressing on the nerves.

Heating, cooling, exercise, and physiotherapy are also options, as is surgery. Each will have benefits and downsides. A chiropractor is often the best choice to treat a bulging disc as non-invasive treatment can be offered that will realign the bulging disc with the rest of the spine, allowing the pressure on the nerves to be relieved, and for the patient to become pain-free.
